Start your morning with this warm, creamy apple cinnamon oatmeal. This recipe features tender apples cooked with cinnamon and finished with a swirl of rich brown sugar for a comforting, wholesome breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups water or milk (dairy or almond milk recommended)
  • 1 large apple, peeled and diced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for cooking oats)
  • 1 tablespoon butter or coconut oil (for sautéing apples)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for sautéing apples)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (for topping swirl)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional topping)
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans (optional topping)

Instructions

  1. Combine the rolled oats, water or milk, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the oats are creamy and the liquid is mostly absorbed. Stir frequently to prevent sticking.
  4. While the oatmeal cooks, prepare the topping: Melt the butter or coconut oil in a small skillet over medium heat.
  5. Add the diced apple and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to the skillet. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender.
  6. Stir the 2 tablespoons of brown sugar into the sautéed apples until it dissolves slightly and coats the fruit.
  7. Divide the cooked oatmeal into serving bowls.
  8. Top each bowl generously with the warm sautéed cinnamon apples and brown sugar mixture.
  9. Drizzle with maple syrup and sprinkle with pecans, if you are using them. Serve immediately for a cozy breakfast.

Notes

  • For a quicker cook time, use quick-cooking oats instead of rolled oats, reducing the simmer time to about 2 minutes.
  • If you prefer a less sweet oatmeal, reduce the brown sugar in the oats to 1 teaspoon and use only maple syrup as a topping.
  • This recipe is excellent for meal prep; store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat with a splash of milk.
