Make the restaurant-style New Orleans dessert, Bananas Foster, at home. This recipe features bananas caramelized in a buttery rum sauce and served warm over vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup dark rum
  • 1/4 cup banana liqueur (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 medium ripe bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the brown sugar and cinnamon to the skillet. Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture bubbles, about 2 minutes. This forms the caramel base.
  3. Add the sliced bananas to the skillet in a single layer. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes per side until they soften slightly and coat in the sauce.
  4. Remove the skillet from the heat. Pour the dark rum and banana liqueur (if using) over the bananas.
  5. Return the skillet to the heat. Carefully ignite the alcohol using a long match or lighter. Let the flames burn out naturally. This is the flambé step.
  6. Once the flames subside, stir in the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Cook for 1 minute until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Serve immediately over scoops of vanilla ice cream. This quick dessert is perfect for impressing guests.

Notes

  • If you skip the flambé step, simply simmer the rum mixture for 1 minute after adding it to allow the alcohol to cook off slightly before adding the cream.
  • Use firm, ripe bananas; they hold their shape better during cooking.
  • For easy meal planning, prepare the sauce base (butter and sugar) ahead of time.
  • This recipe is a great alternative to complex weight loss programs when you need a satisfying sweet treat.
