Make restaurant-quality Bang Bang Shrimp at home using the air fryer for a crispy texture without deep frying. This recipe delivers perfectly crunchy shrimp coated in a creamy, sweet, and spicy sauce, ready fast for an appetizer or quick dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray (or oil for brushing)
  • For the Bang Bang Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha (adjust to your heat preference)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp: Pat the peeled and deveined shrimp completely dry using paper towels. This helps the coating stick.
  2. Set up a dredging station with three shallow dishes. In the first dish, combine the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. In the second dish, whisk the buttermilk and egg together. In the third dish, place the panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Coat the shrimp: Dredge each shrimp first in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess. Dip it into the buttermilk mixture, letting the excess drip off. Finally, press the shrimp firmly into the panko breadcrumbs until fully coated.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (200°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  5. Arrange the coated shrimp in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they do not overlap. Spray the tops of the shrimp lightly with cooking spray or brush with oil for extra crispness.
  6. Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping the shrimp halfway through, until they are golden brown and cooked through.
  7. While the shrimp cooks, prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, honey, rice vinegar, and sesame oil until smooth.
  8. In a large bowl, toss the hot, crispy shrimp immediately with about two-thirds of the prepared Bang Bang sauce until evenly coated.
  9. Serve the shrimp immediately, drizzled with any remaining sauce, as a quick shrimp appetizer or over rice for an easy weeknight seafood dinner.

Notes

  • For the crunchiest shrimp, make sure your shrimp are very dry before coating them.
  • If you prefer deep frying, heat 2 inches of neutral oil to 350°F and fry the shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
  • Serve this flavorful homemade shrimp with shredded lettuce or sliced green onions for added color and texture.
