This recipe delivers the best classic clam dip, a creamy and tangy appetizer made with simple ingredients like cream cheese and canned clams. It is quick to prepare and perfect for parties, game days, or any gathering when served with chips or crackers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 (6.5 ounce) can minced clams, drained well
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions (scallions)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of salt (optional, taste first)
  • For serving: Crackers, potato chips, or fresh vegetables

Instructions

  1. Place the softened cream cheese and sour cream into a medium mixing bowl. Use an electric mixer or a sturdy spoon to beat them together until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
  2. Add the drained minced clams, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper to the bowl. Mix until these ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the cream cheese base.
  3. Stir in the chopped green onions by hand. Taste the dip and add a small pinch of salt only if needed, as the clams and Worcestershire sauce already contain sodium.
  4. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate the clam dip for at least one hour before serving. Chilling allows the flavors to blend and the dip to firm up.
  5. Serve your homemade clam dip cold with your favorite potato chips, sturdy crackers, or vegetable sticks.

Notes

  • For the best texture, make sure you drain the canned clams thoroughly. Press them between paper towels to remove excess liquid.
  • If you prefer a slightly thinner dip, substitute half of the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt.
  • This cold clam dip is an excellent make ahead dip; it keeps well in the refrigerator for up to three days.
  • If you want a little heat, add 1/4 teaspoon of hot sauce along with the Worcestershire sauce for a tangy clam dip with a kick.
