This recipe delivers the creamy, tangy, and sweet flavor of a traditional Southern Buttermilk Pie with a flaky crust. It is a simple, no-fail custard pie that captures old-fashioned comfort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust (use your favorite flaky crust recipe)
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, freshly grated (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Place your unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, flour, and salt until combined.
  3. Add the buttermilk, melted butter, lightly beaten eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Whisk until the mixture is smooth.
  4. If using, stir in the freshly grated nutmeg.
  5. Pour the filling carefully into the unbaked pie crust.
  6. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes. The pie is done when the edges are set and slightly puffed, and the center has only a slight jiggle when gently shaken. The top should be golden brown.
  7. Remove the pie from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool completely. The center will continue to set as it cools.
  8. Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled. This is a perfect Southern comfort dessert.

Notes

  • For a Copycat Cracker Barrel Buttermilk Pie texture, avoid overbaking; a slight wobble in the center is correct.
  • Serve this tangy and sweet pie with a dollop of fresh whipped cream or a dusting of powdered sugar.
  • If you do not have buttermilk, you can make a substitute by mixing 1 cup of whole milk with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice and letting it sit for 5 minutes before using.
