Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • For the Garlic Butter Topping:
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, softened butter, and egg to the yeast mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
  6. Arrange the dough balls in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, salt, and pepper for the topping.
  9. Brush the garlic butter mixture evenly over the risen rolls.
  10. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the rolls.
  11. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  12. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For make-ahead convenience, you can prepare the dough, let it rise, punch it down, and then cover and refrigerate it overnight. In the morning, let it come to room temperature for about 30 minutes before shaping and proceeding with the recipe.
  • You can substitute other cheeses like cheddar or Monterey Jack for the mozzarella.
  • For an extra garlicky flavor, you can add a pinch of garlic powder to the dough.
