Learn how to make glossy, sweet candied orange slices, perfect for garnishing holiday desserts or as edible gifts. This recipe uses a simple boiling and syrup method.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large navel oranges
  • 2 cups granulated sugar, plus more for coating
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the oranges thoroughly. Slice them into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Remove any seeds.
  2. In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add the orange slices to the boiling syrup. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1 hour, or until the rinds are tender and translucent.
  4. Carefully remove the orange slices from the syrup using a slotted spoon. Place them on a wire rack set over parchment paper to drain and cool.
  5. Once cooled, you can lightly coat the slices in additional granulated sugar for extra sparkle.
  6. For chocolate-dipped slices, melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler or microwave. Dip half of each orange slice into the melted chocolate. Place on parchment paper to set.
  7. Allow the candied orange slices to dry completely. This can take 24-48 hours at room temperature, or you can speed up the process by dehydrating them at a low temperature (around 140°F or 60°C) in an oven or food dehydrator until they are firm but still pliable.
  8. Store the candied orange slices in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. For gift boxes, layer them with parchment paper.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use blood oranges or Seville oranges.
  • Ensure the oranges are sliced evenly for consistent cooking.
  • If the syrup becomes too thick during simmering, add a tablespoon of water at a time.
  • The drying time will vary depending on humidity and temperature.
