Learn how to make classic caramel apples, a perfect fall and Halloween treat. This guide covers choosing the best apples, mastering the caramel dipping technique, adding delicious toppings, and packaging them for gifts or parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6–8 medium apples (Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 6 cups caramel bits or 1 bag (14 oz) caramel candies
  • 2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • 12 lollipop sticks or wooden skewers
  • Optional toppings: chopped nuts, sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, crushed cookies

Instructions

  1. Wash and thoroughly dry your apples. Remove any stickers.
  2. Insert a lollipop stick firmly into the stem end of each apple.
  3. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine caramel bits (or unwrapped candies) and milk. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir well. Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until the caramel is smooth and melted.
  4. Dip each apple into the melted caramel, tilting the bowl to coat evenly. Lift the apple and let excess caramel drip back into the bowl.
  5. If using toppings, sprinkle them onto the caramel before it sets.
  6. Place the coated apples on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Let the caramel apples set at room temperature for about 30 minutes, or refrigerate for faster setting.

Notes

  • For a thinner caramel coating, add a little more milk, one teaspoon at a time.
  • If using caramel candies, ensure they are fully melted and smooth for the best coating.
  • Chill your apples slightly before dipping; this helps the caramel set faster.
  • Store caramel apples in a cool, dry place or refrigerate.
