Forget the mix. This homemade caramelized onion dip uses slow-cooked onions for rich, sweet flavor. It is creamy, savory, and the best party appetizer for gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine the sliced onions, butter, and olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes, for 40 to 50 minutes until they are deeply golden brown and sweet. Do not rush this step; low and slow creates the best flavor.
  3. Stir in the salt and pepper during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Remove the onions from the heat and let them cool slightly.
  4. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
  5. Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder to the cream cheese. Mix until just combined and creamy.
  6. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the cream cheese mixture. Mix well to distribute the onions evenly.
  7. Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. This step is key for a rich flavor.
  8. Before serving, taste and adjust salt or pepper if needed. Garnish with fresh chives.

Notes

  • For an even richer flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the sour cream with grated sharp white cheddar cheese.
  • If you want a hot baked caramelized onion dip, mix all ingredients, transfer to an oven-safe dish, top with a sprinkle of Gruyere cheese, and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15 minutes until bubbly.
  • Serve this crowd pleasing dip with sturdy potato chips, pita chips, crackers, or fresh vegetable sticks like carrots and celery.
