Make these classic chocolate crinkle cookies for a rich, brownie-like texture and a signature cracked powdered sugar coating. This recipe is simple, requires no chilling, and delivers bakery-quality results perfect for holiday baking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for rolling dough)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for final coating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Place 1/2 cup of powdered sugar in a shallow dish. Scoop the dough into tablespoon-sized balls. Roll each ball first in the 1/2 cup of powdered sugar, coating completely.
  7. Roll the sugared dough balls again in the remaining 1 cup of powdered sugar, ensuring a thick, even coating. This second coating helps create the signature cracks.
  8. Place the coated dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. The edges will look set, but the centers will still look slightly soft.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. The cracks will set as they cool.

Notes

  • For the best crackle effect, make sure the dough balls are heavily coated in powdered sugar before baking.
  • If you want a peppermint variation, add 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the wet ingredients and roll the finished cookies in a mix of powdered sugar and crushed peppermint candies.
  • If you are planning your weekly meals, this recipe pairs well with a simple meal planning approach for weeknight dinners.
