Make rich, smooth chocolate syrup in five minutes using basic pantry ingredients. This recipe tastes better than store-bought versions and works well on ice cream, in milk, or coffee.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a small saucepan. Whisk these dry ingredients together.
  2. Add the water to the saucepan. Place the pan over medium heat.
  3. Stir the mixture constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer. This should take about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat immediately after it simmers.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Pour the syrup into a clean jar or container. Allow it to cool completely before using. The syrup will thicken as it cools.

Notes

  • For chocolate milk, mix 2 tablespoons of syrup with 1 cup of cold milk.
  • Store the finished chocolate syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • If you prefer a thinner syrup for drizzling, add 1 to 2 extra tablespoons of water while cooking.
