Welcome! I’m Sarah, and I’m so happy you’re here. Learn how to make the best homemade applesauce on the stovetop in just 30 minutes. This simple, one-pot recipe focuses on natural sweetness and lets you choose between a chunky or smooth texture. Skip the store-bought jars and enjoy this comforting homemade treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lbs apples (a mix of sweet and tart, like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (optional, adjust to taste for naturally sweet applesauce)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and core the apples. You can peel them if you prefer a smoother texture, but for quick applesauce, leaving the peel on works well. Cut the apples into 1-inch chunks.
  2. Place the apple chunks and water into a large, heavy-bottomed pot.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The apples should be very tender.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat. If using, stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until dissolved.
  5. Decide on your texture: For chunky applesauce, mash the apples lightly with a potato masher. For smooth applesauce, use an immersion blender carefully in the pot until you reach your desired consistency.
  6. Serve the homemade applesauce warm, or cool completely before storing it in the refrigerator. This recipe makes a versatile apple side dish perfect for snacks or breakfast.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, use a combination of apples. Granny Smith provides tartness, while Fuji or Gala offer natural sweetness.
  • If you prefer a very smooth applesauce without peeling, you can press the cooked mixture through a food mill after mashing.
  • This recipe is great for meal prep. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
