Make the best party appetizer with this homemade French onion dip recipe. It uses slow-caramelized onions for deep, savory flavor, moving beyond the simple soup mix version. This creamy dip is perfect for game days or any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Combine the sliced onions, butter, and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 40 minutes until the onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized. Stir in the salt and pepper during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
  3. Add the sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder to the cream cheese. Mix until just combined.
  4. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture until evenly distributed.
  5. Cover the dip and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld.
  6. Serve your homemade onion dip cold with potato chips, crackers, or vegetable sticks.

Notes

  • For an even richer flavor, you can bake the finished dip at 350°F for 15 minutes until warm and bubbly before serving.
  • If you are short on time, you can substitute 1 cup of good quality French onion soup mix (like Lipton’s) for the fresh caramelized onions, but the flavor will be less deep.
  • This dip tastes best when made a day ahead, allowing the caramelized onion flavor to fully infuse the base.
