Ingredients
Scale
1 1/2 cups warm water (105-115°F)
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil, plus more for greasing
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
4 cloves garlic, minced (for topping)
1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning (for topping)
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)
Instructions
Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let this mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
Prepare the dough: Add 3 1/2 cups of the flour, salt, and 1/4 cup of vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes, adding the remaining flour as needed until the dough is smooth and elastic. It should be soft.
First rise: Lightly grease a large bowl with oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Preheat and shape: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin stick, about 10 to 12 inches long. Place the breadsticks on the prepared baking sheet.
Second rise: Cover the shaped breadsticks loosely and let them rest for 15 minutes while the oven finishes preheating.
Bake: Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the breadsticks are lightly golden brown.
Make the garlic butter topping: While the breadsticks bake, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, and Italian seasoning in a small bowl.
Brush and finish: Immediately after removing the breadsticks from the oven, brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture. Sprinkle evenly with the grated Parmesan cheese.
Serve: Serve the breadsticks warm. For easy meal planning, you can prepare the dough ahead of time and bake when ready.
Notes
For extra cheesy breadsticks, sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the tops during the last two minutes of baking before applying the garlic butter.
If you prefer a quicker method, you can use store-bought pizza dough, skipping steps 1 through 4.
These breadsticks pair well with pasta dishes or as a side when you are not using meal delivery companies.
