Welcome! I’m Sarah, and I’m so happy you’re here. Make this easy mashed sweet potatoes recipe for a silky smooth side dish perfect for Thanksgiving or any family dinner. You get a comforting, buttery mash that is simple to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, for a hint of sweetness)

Instructions

  1. Place the sweet potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a pinch of salt to the water.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to maintain a steady simmer. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain the sweet potatoes completely in a colander. Let them sit for 2 to 3 minutes to allow excess steam to escape; this helps prevent watery mash.
  4. Return the drained sweet potatoes to the warm pot. Add the heavy cream and butter.
  5. Use a potato masher or an electric hand mixer on low speed to mash the potatoes until they are smooth and creamy. Do not overmix, or the texture can become gluey.
  6. Stir in the salt and cinnamon, if using. Taste the mash and adjust seasoning as needed.
  7. Serve this silky smooth sweet potatoes dish immediately as a comforting side dish for your turkey or main course.

Notes

  • For an extra rich texture, substitute the heavy cream with sour cream or cream cheese.
  • If you prefer a savory mashed sweet potatoes flavor, skip the cinnamon and add 1 clove of roasted garlic and 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme during the mashing stage.
  • To achieve the fluffiest mashed root vegetables, heat the cream and butter slightly before adding them to the potatoes.
