Recreate the classic Philly cheesesteak experience at home with this easy recipe. Featuring thinly sliced ribeye, caramelized onions, and your choice of cheese on a hoagie roll.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 8 slices provolone cheese, American cheese, or Cheez Whiz
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet or on a griddle over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Remove onions from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak to the hot skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring and breaking up the meat, until browned and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Return the caramelized onions to the skillet with the steak. Stir to combine.
  5. Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise, but not all the way through, creating a hinge.
  6. If using provolone or American cheese, lay slices over the steak and onion mixture in the skillet. Cover the skillet for a minute or two until the cheese is melted. If using Cheez Whiz, spread it over the steak and onion mixture.
  7. Spoon the steak, onion, and cheese mixture into the prepared hoagie rolls.
  8. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For an authentic Philly experience, ask your butcher to thinly slice the ribeye or freeze the steak for about 30 minutes before slicing it yourself.
  • You can add sliced bell peppers to the onions while they caramelize if you like.
  • Consider this a great option for meal planning for game day.
