A classic apple crisp with tender, tart apples and a buttery cinnamon crumb topping, perfect for fall baking and holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium tart apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (not instant)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9-inch pie plate or a 9-inch cast iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup flour, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender, your fingertips, or two forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the rolled oats.
  5. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  7. Let the crisp cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • For a make-ahead dessert, prepare the crisp up to the point of baking, cover, and refrigerate. Bake when ready, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.
  • This recipe is a great option for Thanksgiving desserts.
