This recipe shows you how to make delicious Southern Fried Cabbage with bacon and onion quickly on the stovetop. It is a simple, flavorful vegetable side dish perfect for weeknight meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices bacon, cut into small pieces
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup water or chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add the bacon pieces and cook until crisp. Remove the bacon pieces with a slotted spoon and set them aside, leaving the rendered bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Add the sliced onion to the skillet with the bacon grease. Sauté for 3 to 5 minutes until the onions soften and become translucent.
  3. Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Toss the cabbage and onions together.
  4. Pour the water or chicken broth over the cabbage mixture. Cover the skillet and let the cabbage steam for 5 to 7 minutes, or until it reaches your desired tenderness. Stir occasionally.
  5. Remove the lid and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, allowing any excess liquid to evaporate and the cabbage to slightly caramelize.
  6. Stir the reserved crispy bacon pieces back into the cabbage. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  7. Serve this quick cabbage side dish immediately.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use smoked bacon.
  • If you prefer a low-carb cabbage option, omit any added sugar you might see in other recipes.
  • This simple vegetable side pairs well with grilled chicken or pork chops.
