Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and chopped onion. Cook, breaking up the beef, until browned and onion is tender. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Stir in ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and yellow mustard. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened.
  4. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the hamburger buns. Top with the other halves.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes.
  • You can make the sloppy joe filling ahead of time and reheat it when ready to serve.
  • Serve with your favorite side dishes like potato chips or coleslaw.
