Ingredients
Scale
4 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Combine sliced apples, brown sugar, white sugar, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt in a slow cooker.
Stir to combine.
Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until apples are very soft and spreadable.
Remove the lid and cook on high for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apple butter has thickened to your desired consistency.
Mash the apples with a potato masher or use an immersion blender for a smoother texture.
For canning, ladle hot apple butter into sterilized jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Wipe rims, apply lids and rings, and process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.
Notes
Use a mix of apple varieties like Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala for the best flavor.
Adjust spices to your preference.
Apple butter can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or frozen for longer storage.
