Make this authentic Italian Steak Pizzaiola, featuring tender steaks simmered in a rich, savory tomato and garlic sauce. It is a hearty, flavorful dish perfect for an easy weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 beef steaks (such as sirloin or top round), about 1 inch thick
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Pat the steaks dry with paper towels. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the steaks for 3 to 4 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Do not let the garlic burn.
  4. If using wine, pour it into the skillet and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom. Let it simmer for 1 minute until slightly reduced.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
  6. Return the seared steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce.
  7. Cover the skillet, reduce the heat to low, and let the steaks simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they reach your desired doneness and are tender.
  8. Remove the steaks from the sauce. Stir the fresh parsley into the sauce.
  9. Serve the steaks immediately, spooning the savory tomato garlic sauce over the top. This is a great comfort food steak option.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add 1/2 cup of sliced onions when you sauté the garlic.
  • Serve this Italian beef skillet dish over pasta, creamy polenta, or with crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, remove the lid for the last 5 minutes of simmering.
