Ingredients
Scale
2 lbs beef round steak, cut into 1-inch thick pieces
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
8 oz mushrooms, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
In a shallow dish, combine flour, salt, and pepper. Dredge each piece of steak in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
Heat vegetable oil in a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the steak on both sides. Remove steak from skillet and set aside.
Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the sliced mushrooms and minced garlic, and cook for another 2-3 minutes until mushrooms are browned and garlic is fragrant.
Stir in the diced tomatoes, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
Return the browned steak to the skillet, ensuring it is mostly submerged in the liquid.
Cover the skillet tightly with a lid or foil. Transfer to the preheated oven and braise for 2 to 2.5 hours, or until the steak is very tender.
Serve hot, spooning the gravy over the steak.
Notes
For an even more tender steak, you can pound the beef round steak with a meat mallet before dredging it in flour.
This dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
Consider this a great option if you are looking for budget beef recipes or old fashioned recipes.
